TB2 BOOK REVIEW – 1000-word (ABSOLUTLEY 1000 WORDS) book review of a work of cross-cultural fiction, to demonstrate understanding of the concepts of culture and communication and the skill of book reviewing. Detailed instructions to be given in class. To be submitted in hard copy.

For submission:
You are required to submit as follows:
What can “A CONCISE CHINISE-ENGLISH DICTIONARY FOR LOVERS” by Xiaolu GUO reveal to us about culture, acculturation, (English) language, communication and identity in the modern world?
Drawing on concepts from Intercultural Communication, write an analytical book review of the protagonist’s experience, for a national quality newspaper and present your work in InDesign. (1000 words)
Present your work as a single, A3, colour spread, following the style of your newspaper of choice.

NB – JUST TO MAKE THIS ABSOLUTELY CLEAR – YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WRITE THE QUESTION/ESSAY TITLE OUT LIKE THIS (FIRST 2 SENTENCES ABOVE). YOU JUST SUBMIT THE BOOK REVIEW AS A LITERARY PIECE/FEATURE, EXACTLY AS IT WOULD LOOK IN A NATIONAL NEWSPAPER. IT IS A PIECE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE CREATIVE WRITING, NOT AN ACADEMIC ESSAY. NO REFERENCING IS NECESSARY.

HARD COPY HAND-IN, A3 and in colour. Remember that InDesign project files are only transportable to other computers which have Adobe CS InDesign installed on them. There will be pressure on the printers before the deadline, so please make sure you do this work in good time. Late delivery will be penalised.

Please come and ask me if you’re having trouble with InDesign.
The Book Review -critical analysis of a work of fiction/non-fiction
Like academic writing, a book review presents not only a summary but a measured analysis/an argument.
• Intro, writer’s aims
• Brief plot summary/context
• Balanced critical analysis of content, style, key issues
• Conclusion and evaluation/recommendation
A book review typically contains a number of the following elements:
1. References to author background/oeuvre
2. Plot and characterisation/development
ps: i WILL BE SENDING A FEW FILES AS A SAMPLE FOR THE DESIGN OF MY BOOK REVIEW …. This coursework needs to be on the format of A3 ……
