What is the fatal flaw, according to Naomi Klein, of Adbusters?
There is a distinct parallel between how the gallery system works and how advertising works: it consumes that which critiques it, because, as Naomi Klein points out, there is a market for it. If this is the case, then how do we create a viable form of discourse and critique?
Phil Knight once said, “there’s a flip side to the emotions we generate and the tremendous well of emotions we live off of. Somehow, emotions imply their opposites and at the level we operate, the reaction is much more than a passing thought” (Klein 287). Remarkably insightful– can we flip that to the effect of jamming? If there is a backlash of sorts to advertising, then what is the response to jamming?
In your opinion, is jamming more effective when it takes on issues of public vs private, or when it attacks specific issues (like Nike’s labor practices or CK’s use of emaciated models)?
Klein writes, “But the real truth is that, as a culture, we seem to be capable of absorbing limitless amounts of cognitive dissonance on our TV sets…” I would argue that this is true of almost any mass consumed media… how does that effect the impact of advertising/jamming?
Klein talks about ‘cool hunters,’ and the search for edginess. There is a cultural attitude that the ‘masses’ are mindless consuming sheep. We ARE the masses. Respond to this irony.
Is jamming art? (careful here… this is a pretty complicated question)
What about the ‘washroom ads’ and the continued placement of ads in private spaces?
In 1999, Nike (via Wieden and Kennedy) tried to get Ralph Nader to sell their shoes by saying “Another shameless attempt by Nike to shell shoes.” Nader turned them down. Can you respond to this attempt to subvert the subversion of jamming?
Respond to the history of jamming. One could argue that it started with the Dadaists (during the wake of devastation caused by WWI), then blew up again in the 1930’s Great Depression Era in the U.S., then again in the late 60’s and early 70’s. It started again in the 1990’s around the time of the first war Gulf War. I see a pattern here… can you speak to that? Why jam in times of suffering/conflict?
This chapter was written almost 10 years ago– how has the nature of jamming changed? Has it? What has changed, what is the same? What, in your opinion, is the future of jamming?
